The Problem with Stale Fuel
Petrol doesn’t last forever.
After just 30 days, it starts to break down, forming sticky deposits that can clog your mower's carburettor and fuel lines. This degradation leads to poor combustion, making it difficult (or impossible) to start the engine.
If you left petrol in your ATCO lawnmower over the winter, it’s highly likely the fuel has deteriorated, which is why the mower won't start, even if it was running smoothly last season.
How to Resolve Stale Fuel Issues
1. Drain the fuel tank:
Safely remove any old petrol from the tank and dispose of it responsibly at an authorized recycling point.
2. Clean the carburettor:
Old fuel can leave varnish-like deposits that restrict fuel flow. Cleaning the carburettor may be necessary.
3. Refill with fresh petrol:
Always use high-quality unleaded fuel. For added protection, consider adding a fuel stabilizer to keep petrol fresher for longer.
4. Prime and test:
Prime the engine and attempt to restart the mower.
Preventing Fuel Problems in the Future
Tip one: Run the tank dry:
Before storing your ATCO mower for winter, let the engine run until all fuel has been used up.
Tip two: Use a fuel stabiliser:
If draining isn’t practical, add a fuel stabiliser to fresh petrol and run the mower briefly to circulate it through the system.
