Organic September : Everything you need to know

What does the word organic really mean to you? If you sometimes tend to ignore this term as simply a marketing ploy to sell expensive vegetables to you at posh markets and garden centres, it could be time to think again.

With the fears of severe climate change drawing ever nearer into a reality we are starting to all experience, organic and sustainable ways of growing produce could be one of the most important things we do when feeding our families.

‘Organic September’ was launched in 2014 by the Soil Association as a way of promoting organic growing, farming and produce as a healthier, more environmentally friendly and sustainable choice.

Organically grown or farmed food have the benefit of supporting wildlife and natural biodiversity, it also helps in terms of offering a higher standard of animal welfare.  It benefits us too in fighting climate change, because the lack of pesticides and other fuel-based fertilisers, which are produced in a highly intensive way, are prohibited.

If you want to get involved and support ‘Organic September’ by trying your utmost to buy produce that is organically produced, look for the special symbol. The Soil Association logo on a product will mean that it has been certified by Soil Association Certification, they certify over 70% of organic food in the UK.

And don’t forget you can grow your own veggies in the garden too by buying organic seed which is available from a number of UK seed companies.  There is a lovely wide range of colourful tasty treats that you can grow and make that little change to help the environment yourself!
